Avoid These Common DIY Snow Removal Mistakes

by Tiffany Gonzales

It's that time of year again –– snow is falling, and the sidewalks and driveways need to be cleared. Before you grab your shovel and start chipping away at the frozen tundra that has taken over your driveway, there are a few things to keep in mind to avoid some common DIY snow removal mistakes. Read on to learn more.

Not Preparing Properly

Before starting any DIY project, it's important to ensure you have all the supplies and tools necessary for success. This applies doubly to snow removal!

Be sure to check that your shovels are in working order, that your snow blower has fuel, and that any other equipment you'll be using is ready to go before the first flake falls from the sky. You don't want to find yourself halfway through a job without the right tools.

In some cases, a professional snow removal service may be the best option, especially if you live in an area that receives heavy snowfall. Even if you have the right tools, a professional service might be faster and more efficient in clearing your driveway or sidewalk.

Overdoing It

Another mistake many people make when performing their own snow removal is doing too much work too quickly. Removing too much snow or working too hard can lead to fatigue or serious injuries like pulled muscles or strains. Also, snow can be heavy, and it's easy to overexert yourself without knowing it.

Sometimes, the snow can appear to be melted or packed down, but looks can be deceiving. There's always a chance that the snow is highly compacted and too heavy to move.

When removing snow, try to work at a steady pace and take frequent breaks. Don't try to clear your entire driveway in one go –– break it up into smaller sections so that you don't get overwhelmed. If something doesn't feel quite right, then stop what you're doing and call a professional.

Inadequate Salting Techniques

If icy patches are a problem on your walkways, then salting may be necessary. Salting can help prevent snow and ice from building up, but it needs to be done properly to be effective. Salt helps melt snow, but it can take some time for the chemical reaction to occur.

However, it's important not to overdo it with salt –– too much salt can damage grass, plants, and even concrete surfaces beneath it. In addition, salt won't do much good unless it's applied correctly. Spread evenly over surfaces before ice forms for best results. And add a bit more salt if the temperatures drop or after it snows again.

About Me

Creating A Gorgeous Garden

I have always been someone who absolutely adores being outside, which is probably one of the reasons I decided to buy a home with a large lot. However, as soon as I moved in, I realized that yard work was a lot more challenging than I had anticipated, which is why I called in a team of professional landscapers. They were amazing to work with and got right to it, and within a few days, the yard was looking amazing. I wanted to create a blog all about creating beautiful outdoors spaces so that other people can help to beautify the world.
