Common Lawn Mowing Mistakes

by Tiffany Gonzales

Cutting your lawn is a routine task that you will have to do throughout the spring and summer months. While mowing the lawn is a routine task, property owners can often find it more difficult to get the results that they are wanting or to avoid common problems as a result of overlooking a few of the best practices for cutting grass.

Take A Few Moments To Assess The Lawn For Debris

Prior to starting to use the lawnmower, you should take a few moments to assess the area where you will be using it. Removing any debris from the grass can be necessary to ensure that the lawnmower is able to provide a consistent cut across the grass as well as avoid the potential risk of substantial damage occurring to the mower. This is especially important for those that have small children as they may leave toys and other items in the grass, and you may not see it before you hit it with the lawnmower.

Periodically Assess The Condition Of The Lawnmower's Blade

The blade of the lawnmower will need to be periodically adjusted and sharpened. While it may not seem like the grass would be able to cause the blade to become dull, there are many other objects and items that it could strike while it is being used. This could lead to the blade quickly becoming dull or developing chips in it. A poorly aligned blade may also cut the grass at an uneven angle, which could severely impact the look of the lawn when you are finished mowing. Luckily, it is relatively easy to replace a lawnmower blade, but you will want to be mindful during this process to ensure that the blade is fully secured and that it is correctly balanced. Otherwise, it could become unstable while the mower is being used, which could lead to damage occurring.

Appreciate The Impacts Cutting The Grass Can Have On The Nutrients In The Soil

Individuals often fail to appreciate the fact that mowing the grass and collecting the clippings can remove nutrients from the soil. If the clippings are not allowed to decompose and return to the soil, this will result in the soil gradually becoming less fertile for your lawn. While it is ideal for these clippings to be left in place to decompose naturally, there are many communities with rules requiring these clippings to be collected. If this is the case for your area, you may need to periodically add fertilizers to the lawn to replace the nutrients that are gradually being depleted.

About Me

Creating A Gorgeous Garden

I have always been someone who absolutely adores being outside, which is probably one of the reasons I decided to buy a home with a large lot. However, as soon as I moved in, I realized that yard work was a lot more challenging than I had anticipated, which is why I called in a team of professional landscapers. They were amazing to work with and got right to it, and within a few days, the yard was looking amazing. I wanted to create a blog all about creating beautiful outdoors spaces so that other people can help to beautify the world.
