4 Questions To Answer When Ordering Sod

by Tiffany Gonzales

If you are thinking about installing sod, then there are a few things you will need to know. Answering the following questions can increase the chances of a successful sod installation.

1. Do You Need a Specific Type?

Sod comes in different turf varieties, so you can be sure to get the type of grass that you prefer for your lawn. You may need to contact several different sod suppliers to find the type of turf you want, as sod farms tend to specialize in only one or two varieties. If you are unsure what type to get, or if you are trying to match the new sod to some existing lawn, then consult with an installation service. That can help you choose the best type of sod for your specific location.

2. How Much Do You Need?

Proper measurements are necessary to ensure you order enough sod for the entire project. Sod is sold by the square foot, so determining how much to order is simple if you have a square or rectangular yard — simply multiply the length of the yard by its width. Curves can be more challenging, so simply measure these areas from the outermost reach of the curve, as it is better to have slightly more sod than you need than it is to come up short.

3. When Will You Need It?

Sod should be ordered in advance so that it is ready when you need it. You want it to be freshly cut, and it should also be installed on the same day that it is delivered. The longer that sod is sitting on a pallet or the back of a truck, the more likely that it won't survive or thrive. Call your supplier about a week before you plan to install the sod and provide them with the exact day that you will be picking it up or requiring delivery.

4. What Preparation Is Necessary?

Every yard is different when it comes to preparation. At a bare minimum, any old turf, weeds, and debris must be removed so only bare soil remains. Ideally, a soil test is then performed to determine if there are any nutrient deficiencies or issues with soil quality. If there is, then you may need to add fertilizer, organic matter, and minerals to the soil prior to sodding.

Contact a sod installation company for further assistance with your new lawn. They can handle every part of the process so you can be sure your new grass is off to a healthy start.

About Me

Creating A Gorgeous Garden

I have always been someone who absolutely adores being outside, which is probably one of the reasons I decided to buy a home with a large lot. However, as soon as I moved in, I realized that yard work was a lot more challenging than I had anticipated, which is why I called in a team of professional landscapers. They were amazing to work with and got right to it, and within a few days, the yard was looking amazing. I wanted to create a blog all about creating beautiful outdoors spaces so that other people can help to beautify the world.
