Five Ways To Break Out Of The Spring Landscaping Doldrums

by Tiffany Gonzales

If you're like most homeowners, you feel a sense of gladness when signs of spring begin to arrive after a long winter. However, spring weather also has a way of bringing the faults of your outdoor living space into sharp focus. If you're landscaping is in a rut, here are five fast ways to provide it with some polish.

Fertilize Your Lawn

Fertilizing your lawn in spring will result in lush new growth that sets the standard for the rest of the season. This new burst of growth will also help crowd out weeds. Keep in mind that the stronger and healthier your lawn is, the less likely it is to succumb to damage from pathogens and pests.

Mulch Your Perennial Beds and Under Your Trees and Shrubs

A good layer of mulch provides your lawn and garden area with a finished, well-kept look -- something that's often sadly lacking in most home landscapes after a long winter. Dark mulch, in particular, provides a good backdrop that makes plants stand out. Mulch has more than just aesthetic appeal, however -- it helps prevent weed seeds from germinating, helps keep soil erosion from occurring, helps hold water in the soil, and protects plant roots from both hot and cold temperature extremes. If you use organic mulch, it will also provide the soil with nutrients.

Install a Quick Stepping Stone Path

The reason many yards have an unfinished look is because of a lack of hardscaping. Hardscaping consists of decorative or functional elements in the outdoor living space that aren't vegetative. Examples include fountains, fencing, statuary, birdbaths, ponds, and paths. Adding a stepping stone pathway is a quick way to give your yard a more pulled-together look.

Spruce Up Your Stumps

Even the most well-tended yards take on a neglected air when bare stumps are a part of the picture. If having them completely removed isn't a feasible option, turn the tables on them and make them into interesting and attractive planters instead. Hollow them out enough so that they'll hold a foot or so of potting soil and fill them with colorful flowers. Trailing plants such as nasturtiums and morning glories will quickly cover the entire stump with bright blossoms.

Plant Fast-Growing Annuals

Even if you don't need to cover any stumps, fast-growing annuals bring a cheery note to any location of your yard. Place them in planters, let them cascade from hanging baskets, plant them in flowerbeds, or line your walkway with them -- no matter how you choose to use them, many varieties will begin to bloom six weeks after planted from seed and even sooner if you purchase starts from your local plant nursery.

About Me

Creating A Gorgeous Garden

I have always been someone who absolutely adores being outside, which is probably one of the reasons I decided to buy a home with a large lot. However, as soon as I moved in, I realized that yard work was a lot more challenging than I had anticipated, which is why I called in a team of professional landscapers. They were amazing to work with and got right to it, and within a few days, the yard was looking amazing. I wanted to create a blog all about creating beautiful outdoors spaces so that other people can help to beautify the world.
