Don't Let The Cold Kill Your Lawn: 3 Winter Maintenance Tips

by Tiffany Gonzales

Having a lush landscape is something that many homeowners feel is important. A well-groomed lawn can add significantly to the aesthetic appeal and financial value of your home. While many homeowners think that there is little to be done when it comes to maintaining a lawn during the winter, it's important that you recognize the value in winter lawn maintenance if you want your lawn to remain healthy and vibrant.

Here are three tips you can use to improve the quality of your lawn during the winter months.

1. Keep your yard free from debris.

As temperatures begin to cool, your lawn will enter a period of dormancy. This dormancy is evident by the brownish color your law will exhibit, coupled with a suspension in growth. It's important that you don't let any debris sit on a dormant lawn for too long.

The added weight and reduced sunlight caused by debris can significantly affect your lawn's ability to grow properly in the spring. Be sure that you don't place any holiday decorations on your lawn, and try to remove any toys or lawn ornaments before these items become covered with snow.

2. Mark walkways with colorful stakes.

One of the most important things that you can do during the winter months to ensure your lawn retains is vibrancy and beauty is keep your walkways marked with colorful stakes. Creating a clear outline of your sidewalks and driveways with colorful stakes will allow you to easily identify these areas underneath a blanket of thick snow.

You can limit your shoveling or snow-blowing activities to these walkways, preventing you from damaging your lawn by gouging the edges with a snow shovel.

3. Keep ice melt off your lawn.

Ice melt plays an important role in helping you keep your walkways free from dangerous ice spots during the winter. Unfortunately, many ice melt products contain potassium chloride, magnesium, and chloride. These chemicals can take a toll on your lawn, causing the grass to appear yellow or die off during the spring.

Be sure that you are spreading ice melt carefully so that it only comes into contact with your walkways, and advice family members and guests not to walk across your lawn if they have ice melt on the bottoms of their boots.

Taking action to care for your lawn during the cold winter months will help to ensure the beauty of your yard when the weather begins to warm. Remove debris from your yard, mark walkways to avoid damaging grass when clearing snow, and keep ice melt away from your lawn this winter.

About Me

Creating A Gorgeous Garden

I have always been someone who absolutely adores being outside, which is probably one of the reasons I decided to buy a home with a large lot. However, as soon as I moved in, I realized that yard work was a lot more challenging than I had anticipated, which is why I called in a team of professional landscapers. They were amazing to work with and got right to it, and within a few days, the yard was looking amazing. I wanted to create a blog all about creating beautiful outdoors spaces so that other people can help to beautify the world.
